Yes Ron, that's the pair I'm referring to. BTW, the system didn't blank out my URL, that is a clickable link at the bottom of my post. Links don't look clickable here on this forum ever since the system switchover, but I think they're working on getting that fixed......

Regardless, it would have been a lot easier, and likely preserved a nice pair of original cones(surrounds at least) had the fella heated them up with a blow dryer before he pulled them. Sad and unnecessary damage to what was otherwise a nice original pair.

I applaud the seller for giving full disclosure, that annular tear at the cone/surround boundary could have easily been left invisible.

I'm sure there are suitable aftermarket surrounds available, if you have the patience............

Good point--he apparently just "ripped" them out of the cabs (even though they must have "felt" stuck in place) with no clue as to what he was doing.....

I wanted to "rip" on the seller a bit for doing that. But i'm sure it was a very honest mistake on his part, and he's selling them "right" so i've got to credit him where it's due. In all fairness, you don't find many drivers with doped surrounds in consoles. He seems to represent what is becoming a minority among sellers where honest representation and fair pricing is concerned.

Might be worth a shout to GPA to see if they would sell you a pair of surrounds, gaskets, and dustcaps. They look worthy of the attempt to me. From what you can see of the cones, they look well preserved.

Well, I have set of ancient 414-8Bs and those are older than mine; and those surrounds are really, really sticky straight from Altec, some of the "surround juice" probably got stuck on the baffle board. The guy who removed them from the console probably didn't know that. BTW: I think would've done the same, and just "gently" remove them from the baffle board. I learned something new to today, when removing Altec pleaded raw speakers from the baffle board, heat with a hair drier.

Personally, IF I were to buy the speakers, I would contact GPA, I bet they can probably suggest a fix, maybe glue on an extra piece of material or something to cover up the hole. I would sure hate to throw away a whole surround or cone just to fix the surround; or I would just use it until the tear gets bigger, it may look nasty, but I bet it will play just fine?

I've got some Jensen speakers that got damaged when removing them from cabinets. I did it. I didn't expect the first driver to do it, since usually "stuck" drivers pop free with no damage. The second driver I was expecting it, and still got damage despite my efforts to prevent it. Thankfully, the damage is repairable, as it mostly affected the cardboard gasket.
